1905 Washburn Model 423

SOLD

1905 Washburn model 423 in excellent condition.  This is one of the earliest guitars we have seen that was clearly intended for steel strings.  X-braced spruce top, gorgeous Brazilian rosewood back and sides, cedar neck with ebony fingerboard and bridge.  Neck has a steel reenforcement.  Scale length is 25.25", the body is 14.5" at lower bout and 4" deep.  Inside the body it is stamped with "NEW MODEL 1897 STYLE," there is a small round white label with the serial number.  The serial number is on the neck block and top of headstock as well.  This guitar predates steel string 00 Martins by about 20 years and we feel is very comparable in sound to those of the 1920s.  If it said "Martin" on the peghead it would be twice the price.  Includes new TKL arch-lid hard shell case.  Really a special guitar.

1921 Martin 0-21 in very good condition.  Brazilian rosewood back and sides with Adirondack spruce top.  Bridge is replaced with correct style but oversized from the original.  Bridge plate also a larger but still thin replacement.  The slightly stouter bridge area on this guitar allows for the use of light gauge steel strings despite it being made for gut.  It is lightweight and responsive.  A true gem for fingerstyle playing.  The original bar frets are in good shape and the neck is nice and straight.  Has had two small side cracks repaired, neck reset, and new nut.  Shellac finish is original and in very nice shape.  This guitar favors a lighter touch and is warm and sweet when played this way.  Includes newer hard case.

1923 Gibson A-4

SOLD

1923 Gibson A-4 mandolin in excellent condition.  Here is a lovely Loar-era snakehead mandolin.  These are among the finest made and most sought A mandolins ever built.  All original with the exception of an exact repro pickguard made here.  The finish is all original French polish.  The back and sides are made from figured maple and the top is Adirondack spruce.  Interestingly Gibson only specified the type of spruce used on the F-5 (Norwegian) and the A-4 (Adirondack).  Playability is wonderful with room to raise or lower the action to suit your style.  There is a small well repaired crack near the tailblock.  Original tuners and truss rod function as they should.  The sound is everything you could want in an A style mandolin.  Has enough bark to cut through the mix but plenty of sweet woodiness when played with a light touch.  Overall a wonderful instrument in every way.  Comes with the original hard case which has a newer handle.

1927 Martin 0-28

SOLD

1927 Martin 0-28 in very good condition.  Gorgeous Brazilian rosewood back and sides with Red Spruce top are all crack free.  There is something magic about the guitars Martin made from 1926-1930.  The combination of lightness and quality materials makes for feather light strong guitars that out punch their weight class.  The finish on the back and sides is in excellent condition and all original.  The top finish has some wear and an area of touch up around the bridge.  Neck has been reset and the bridge replaced with nice reproduction.  It appears the guitar once long ago wore a tailpiece, this used to be a common solution to guitars in need of a neck set.  There is an added small bridge plate in front of the intact original plate.  There are three 3/32" holes plugged in the top from what must have been a pickguard.  1 7/8" nut width and rounded V profile with not much taper in depth make for a comfortable feel.  The bar frets have been dressed and nicely crowned for smooth playability.  The sound is delicate when played lightly with air and wood behind the fundamental.  Rich and sweet harmonic overtones linger long after the attack of the note is gone.  A most musical and pleasing experience to play.  Includes original hard case also in very good condition.

1930 Gibson Marshall Special

SOLD

1930 Marshall Special guitar in excellent condition.  Gibson made the Marshall Special Hawaiian guitar for a Lillian G. Marshall, a teacher in Hartford, CT.  Only one model was made and only two known examples exist anywhere, this being one of them.  The other example is featured on the cover of Paul Fox's book The Other Brands of Gibson.  Possibly the rarest Gibson guitar ever made!  Ours is in near-perfect original condition.  There are a few very minor scuffs, but it is all original right down to the case.  Incredible tropical volcano scene painted on the spruce top.  Pearloid fingerboard overlay with painted squares and pearloid peghead overlay that reads Marshall Special.  The mahogany back and sides have a dark brown finish.  This is the lightest built L-00 style guitar in existence.  The braces are about half the size of 1930 L-00s.  We have silk and bronze strings on it as it was clearly not intended for anything heavier.  This guitar is so perfect and so rare that it is almost a shame to play it.  Includes original soft case in excellent condition as well.  Once in a lifetime chance to own the king of the painted guitars.

1930 National Duolian

SOLD

1930 National Duolian in excellent condition.  The Duolian model was introduced in 1930 as a more economical model to the fancy plated and engraved guitars being produced in the late 20s.  The appointments are simple and even the gauge of steel used for the bodies is a bit thinner than other models.  The finish is a cool black grey "frosted duco".  It has a nice round mahogany neck.  The original fingerboard was made from a laminated paper material that had no structural integrity.  We put an ebony fingerboard on it with medium frets.  The cone is a replacement from National with the original biscuit.  There are two small screws and a piece of string tied around the treble side of the headstock, an old homebrew repair that was too cool to undo.  The playability is of course spot on perfect.  The sound is powerful and clear with tons of reverb.  Includes soft case.

1930 Washburn 5238

$5299

1930 Washburn 5238 in excellent condition.  This is a most lovely 12 fret 00 size guitar built in Chicago.  This is a Tonk Bros era guitar with what seems to be a Regal made body of spruce and laminate rosewood and neck made by Stewart.  The Chicago made guitars are mysterious with some many factories cross pollinating in the area.  The label inside indicates it is a "Genuine Washburn Tonk Bros. Co. Chicago Sole Distributors".  The scale is 24.9" with a 1 13/16" nut width. It was recently restored by Mark Stutman of Folkway Music who is known for his excellent work.  Neck reset, partial refret, repro bridge, bridge plate, tongue brace, top crack near center seam all work done to the highest standard.  The sound is unusual yet compelling.  There is a quality to the midrange that gives this guitar its voice.  The response is quick and the midrange builds quickly as right hand pressure is applied.  The hollow woody tone is enticing to finger style players but the brightness a pick adds makes for a fine flatpicking guitar as well.  Includes hard case.

1931 Gibson L-10

SOLD

1931 Gibson Black L-10 in excellentcondition.  The L-10 model was clearly in development for sometime at the Gibson factory before being listed as a catalog model.  Examples as early as 1925 exist and are well documented.  The first year the L-10 appears in the catalog is 1932.  At the time it was the second most expensive guitar Gibson made at $175 and the only f-hole archtop other than the L-5.  The earliest examples of the L-10 are essentially identical to L-5 in construction, features and sound.  The serial number of this guitar places it at 1930.  The later dot neck L-10s can be distinguished by their mahogany neck, further differentiating them from the L-5.  This guitar features a 3-piece maple neck with 24.75” scale and 1.75” nut width.  The neck shape is a soft V that fills your hand oh so nicely.  The condition is remarkable with just the right amount of playing wear.  The black finish is deep, rich and beautiful.  The neck has had a perfect reset and refret here in our shop.  The pickguard is an exact copy of the original and nearly undetectable.  The top of the bridge is a compensated reproduction to aid in accurate intonation.  Tuners, bridge bottom, tailpeice and pickguard bracket are original as is the truss rod cover and nut.  The playability is second to none and the sound is everything a guitar this special deserves.  The range of dynamics goes from soft and sweet to powerful chunk.  Gibson archtop guitars are forever the bench mark to which all others are measured.  This guitar is a perfect example why.  Included is the original red-line “faultless” case which is also in excellent condition.

1931 Gibson L-10

$9999

1931 Gibson L-10 in excellent condition.  This is one of about six of these guitars we know to exist.  It is the earliest version just like the one featured in the 1932 catalogue.  When it was introduced the L-10 was second only to the L-5.  George Gruhn famously owns the very first known L-10 which is essentially a black L-5.  This is from the same batch of guitars as the other early L-10 we had some years ago and its construction is identical.  This guitar has the desirable maple three piece neck and solid braces.  The guitar is crack free and in wonderful original condition.  We reset the neck to the proper original bridge height, gave it new frets and a repro pickguard made to original spec.  It plays perfectly and has a sound only found in late 20s early 30s Gibson archtops.  It is similar to L-5s of the era but the rosewood fingerboard gives a slightly different sound especially to the attack of the note.  It has a warm woody tone but still has bite when played hard.  A fine and rare guitar, not to be confused with the later mahogany neck versions.  Includes original hard case.

1931 National Triolian

SOLD

1931 National Triolian in good condition.  This is how National guitars are supposed to look! Not some pseudo aged, faux relic approximation but the real deal.  This one came from a Hugh Pool fan and has been given the DeArmond pickup treatment.  We reset the neck, replaced the crushed original cone with a fresh one from National, and set it up.  The neck profile is fat and round and feels very solid in the hand.  We have it set-up with heavy strings tuned to open D and it growls like a monster acoustically, plugged in it becomes a true fire-breather.  The DeArmond pickup feeds back delightfully when hit with high volume or overdrive. A well oiled and worn blues machine through and through.  Includes newer hard case.

1932 Gibson L-00

SOLD

1932 Gibson L-00 in good condition.  Early version with lightweight construction and unusual bound fingerboard.   All original finish in deep bone black.  Has had a recent neck reset and refret both nicely done.  There are two repaired top cracks one from the bridge to the lower bout and one from the pickguard.  The X brace has been reglued in one section and a crack of it repaired.  The binding is an interesting feature, especially because they painted right over it!  Likely these were fingerboards they had for L-2s and just slapped them on some of these early models.  The neck is a nice medium round profile, very comfortable in the hand.  This guitar is the epitome of dry woody tone.  It has an exceptionally crisp attack with lots going on under the fundamental.  Included is a nice Harptone hard case.

1932 Martin C-2 OM-42 Conversion

$12,499

1932 Martin C-2 converted to OM-42 by David Musselwhite in excellent condition.  This conversion was done with a long scale Martin neck with 1 11/16" nut width, 42 style inlays, ivoroid binding, Brazilian rosewood peghead veneer, engraved gold Waverly tuners, MOP logo, vintage profile neck with soft V, adjustable truss rod.  The top is European spurce with forward X bracing, scalloped to be period correct and laid out just like a 1932 OM, maple bridge plate of correct size as well.  Top and neck finished in Nitrocellulose lacquer, back retains original finish and sides have light overspray.  Nut and saddle are ivory, frets are medium tall wire.  David Musselwhite worked at Martin for many years and is a well know repair and restoration specialist.  The work is all top quality and of course looks as though it were done at the factory.  The action is comfortable at 6/64" on bass side to 5/64" on the treble at the 12th fret.  There is plenty of saddle height should one desire it lower.  The sound is impressive with a full responsive bass and power in the midrange.  It is equally at home with flat picking and fingerstyle.  Includes modern hard case.

1933 Kalamazoo Senior Tenor

SOLD

1933 Kalamazoo Senior Tenor guitar made by Gibson in very good condition.  The Kalamazoo Senior was a slightly dressed up version of the KG-11.  This is the first tenor example we have seen.  This one has been played a whole lot and all over the neck.  We reset the neck and refreted it.  We were able to set the neck to the uncut original saddle (always a triumph).  Ladder braced with mahogany back and sides and a spruce top.  The sunburst is about as small as they get.  There is wear through the original finish that makes for a handsome appearance.  The tone is dry and woody with excellent cut.  Ladder bracing works really well for tenor guitars.  It gives a distinct tone and really bridges the gap between the banjos that these grew out of and standard guitar designs.  Includes soft shell case.

1934 Gibson L-10

SOLD

1934 Gibson L-10 in very good condition.  If you follow our shop you know we have a soft sport for black L-10s.  This guitar is the model described in the catalog from 1934.  It is solid carved northern maple back and sides, and eastern spruce top (Gibson's terms).  The finish is the unmistakable deep ebony only found on Gibsons.  Mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard and picture frame inlays. We reset the neck to get the proper bridge height.  The original bridge top had been cut down son we made an exact reproduction.  Recent refret with our favorite size fret wire for archtops Stewmac #141.  Reproduction celluloid pickguard made here and finished with lacquer and period mounting hardware.  As you would expect playability is excellent and action can be adjusted to suit playing style.  We prefer to set these up with medium gauge strings to drive the top and get the most volume.  The sound is thick in the midrange and loves a heavy right hand attack.  A wonderful guitar for rhythm playing.  Includes new Guardian hard case.

1935 Gibson L-10 Special Order

SOLD

1935 Gibson L-10 in excellent condition.  The L-10 was the second fanciest and expensive archtop in Gibson's line when it was introduced in in the late 1920s.  Essentially the same guitar as an L-5 only black and with a rosewood fingerboard.  The early dot neck versions with a maple neck are quite rare and fine sounding guitars.  By 1933 the cosmetics and construction changed with picture frame inlays and mahogany necks.  This guitar has a FON of 17A-18 which is listed in Gibson records as "Black Special".  The serial number on the label is 92006 which dates to 1934.  It is also stamped L-10 on the paper label.  The construction of the guitar is all 1920s in style.  It has a three piece maple neck with 1 3/4" nut width and V shape.  The tone bars are solid not kerfed, a change that occurs on L-5s around 1929.  The top is made from Eastern Spruce and the back and sides are maple. The two footed ebony bridge is original and has the serial number chalked on the underside. The pickguard, tailpiece and tuners are also all original and in great shape.  The finish is all original.  We refretted it and repaired a small center seam separation on the back and one near invisible top crack.  The features of this guitar suggest it was ordered to compete with a 16" L-5.  The look is stunning and the sound impressive.  It has a huge open voice.  The attack is explosive with a hard pick and strong right hand.  There is thickness to the trebles all over the neck.  As powerful of a 16" guitar as we have heard.  Quite possibly a singular example with these features.  Includes original hard case.

1937 Gibson L-Century

SOLD

1937 Gibson L-Century in very good condition.  These were originally made to celebrate the Chicago Century of Progress Exhibition in 1934.  The liberal use of celluloid and flame maple make for one stunning guitar.  This is a particularly good sounding example with a solid back and sides (many are laminate backs).  Crack free and no major repairs ever done.  The treble side was over-sprayed to cover some wear and the back and sides were buffed.  The neck is V shape with a 1 3/4" nut.  The bridge is original and has been reglued.  The guitar is solid and plays great.  The sound is crisp and bright with a full clear bass.  Comes with a 1950s brown Lifton case.

1937 National Duolian

$3799

1937 National Duolian in very good condition.  This is towards the end of the production for California made Nationals.  By 1939 the Duolian was gone and the company had moved to Chicago soon to become Valco. This one has the very cool Duco crystalline finish.  One nice feature of the later version is the radiused hard-wood fingerboard often called red-bean although this one appears to be mahogany.  The original cone is in excellent shape and sounds great.  We gave this guitar the full treatment.  Neck angle adjustment, new biscuit and saddle, repro tuners, replaced a chip in the heel, and most importantly added a square 6106-T6 aluminum tube in the neck for rigidity and strength.  These necks are made from fairly soft big-leaf maple.  Adding a reinforcement to the neck greatly improves bass and volume as well as stability.  The sound is big and loud with all kinds of echo.  Check out the great jazz guitarist Russell Malone playing it in open D here.

1937 National Duolian Chrome

$3599

1937 National Duolian in very good condition.  This is one of the cool later 14-fret Duolians with radiused fingerboard.  At some point seemingly quite a few years ago it was striped and chrome plated and a nice large pearloid star was inlaid in the headstock.  The chrome was professionally done and looks as though it could have come from National this way.  The orignal cone and biscuit are in great shape and the neck is nice and straight.  We performed a neck set and heat press to get it playing perfectly as well as reglued the fingerboard.  The tuners are replaced with 50s Grover G-98s.  The sound is loud and full with excellent reverb.  Includes hard case.

1940 Grinnell Special Spanish

SOLD

1936 Gibson made Grinnell Special Spanish in excellent condition.  Grinnell Brothers was the largest music retailer in Michigan in the 1930s.  They had Gibson make them a house brand in the mid 30s.  This guitar is similar to a Kalamazoo Oriole however it has a gorgeous sunburst finish and the way-cool Grinnell logo on the peghead.  This very guitar is featured in Paul Fox's book “The Other Brands of Gibson Guitars”.  The flamed maple back and sides give the tone a nice snap and clean high end.  Interestingly this guitar has a mahogany fingerboard dyed dark.  Unclear if this was specified or just a case of Gibson using what they had on hand.  Original condition except for a perfect reproduction bridge and neck reset done here by Tom.  Original frets received a grind and polish so playability is perfect.  Includes original soft case.

1940 Martin 00-18

SOLD

1940 Martin 00-18 in good condition.  A charming pre-war 00 with fine sound.  The attractive Red Spruce top and rich tortoise pickguard combined with ebony bridge and fingerboard make for gorgeous instrument.  This guitar has recently gone through a restoration in our shop.  We reset the neck  to the original saddle.  The action is very comfortable with standard light gauge strings.  100% crack free, not even the ubiquitous pickguard crack.  Original full height bridge, nut, tuners, saddle, and frets.  When we removed the neck to reset it we discovered the side that faces you while playing had been replaced by Martin.  The work is exquisite and would take the keenest eye to detect without seeing the body with neck off.  Appears to have been done not long after the guitar was new.  The finish on the top is all original and in excellent condition.  Areas of the side and back have been worn through the finish and touched up years ago.  The sound is warm and sweet.  The combination of Red Source, scalloped braces, and ebony bridge and fingerboard are a well known winning mix.  There is a lightness and airiness when played softly that is mesmerizing.  The balance at medium volume is impeccable and when you drive it hard goes into a full growl.  A fine sounding guitar.  Includes original hard case in good condition.

1940 Martin 00-18H

SOLD

1940 Martin 00-18H in very good condition.  The 00-18H was produced form 1935-1941 with a total of 255 guitars.  Originally these had flush bar frets, bridges without compensated saddles and high nuts.  The conversion done to this one involved a replacement fingerboard with T frets, a new bridge with compensated saddle, a neck reset, and a lower nut.  The fingerboard has diamond inlays instead of the usual dots.  Nice dark sunburst finish on the Red Spruce top.  Crack free all around.  Neck is 1 7/8" at the nut and spacing at bridge is 2 5/16".  Lack of T-bar in neck makes for a feather weight instrument.  Dry, clear, and responsive are the first three words that come to mind regarding the sound.  The delicately scalloped X bracing and overall lightness of the guitar can be felt as the whole guitar moves with even a light touch.  The 12 fret 00 size is a near perfect timeless design.  Includes recent hard case.

Circa 1940 Orpheum Imperial archtop in very good condition.  This appears to have been made by Gretsch in the early 1940s.  Solid carved spruce top, laminate flamed maple back and sides, maple neck, ebony fingerboard, and Brazilian rosewood bridge.  The body is 17" at lower bout, 12 1/2" at upper bout, 3 1/2" deep all the way around.  Has a long 26" scale length and 1 23/32" nut width.  The neck shape is like a late 40s Gibson with full rounded profile.  The original tailpiece is engraved with "Orpheum".  Has original pickguard which has evidence of a previously mounted DeArmound pickup.  Has had a refret with large wire and replaced Grover Imperial tuners, likely replacements of original Imperials.  Hard to beat the deco look of this one.  Real pearl inlays and multiple bindings everywhere!  The sound is woody and tight.  This would make a great stage guitar!  Includes deluxe original hard case.

1941 Gibson J-35 in very good condition.  This is the last version of the J-35 and has most of the features that would become the J-45 and J-50 in 1942.  Mahogany back and sides with spruce top, x braced with two scalloped tone bars.  Mahogany neck with French heel, Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge.  Round neck shape with 1 11/16" nut width and 24 1/2" scale.  We reset the neck (quite invisibly), reglued the bridge and repaired the top center seam.  There is one long ago repaired top crack as well and the back and sides are crack free.  The finish is original and has a wonderful golden patina to the top.  The neck has a few capo marks that we have filled and leveled.  The playability is spot on as you should expect form a guitar that has gone through our shop.  The sound is powerful and clear.  Each note is well defined.  It is great in the same way many scalloped D-18s are great.  The balance when strumming full chords is ideal for accompaniment yet it has the power to play single note lead runs.  Quite impressive.  Includes original soft case and strap.

1941 Gibson L-0

SOLD

1941 Gibson L-0 in very good condition.  These late L-0 are interesting guitars as they bridge the gap between the L-0 and 00 of the 30s with the LG-2 of the 1940s.  The top bracing is scalloped and they have big round necks, both features found on the LG-2 from the Banner era.  This guitar is all original except for a new saddle and one bridge pin.  We reset the neck and made a new saddle to get the action perfect.  Crack free guitar.  Finish has lots of checking.  Large rounded neck shape with truss rod 1 3/4" nut width and 24 3/4" scale length.  Has, as you might have guessed, a sound like a mix of an L-00 and LG-2.  The scalloped bracing gives it a fuller and warmer sound than most L-0s.  Includes non original hard case.

1941 Gibson Roy Smeck Stage De Luxe

SOLD

1941 Gibson Roy Smeck Stage De Luxe conversion in very good condition.  Tom converted this Roy Smeck to spanish style.  The process, which I have previously documented on our blog involved: neck reset, neck reshaping taking the nut width down from 2 1/8" to 1 13/16", adding a 1/2" aluminum square tube to stiffen the neck, filled and recut bridge for saddle compensation and fretting.  The neck finish is a spot on match of the original done using the same techniques as Gibson used in 1941.  The neck reinforcement makes for a stiff neck that will not bend from string tension.  The material we use has the same mass as the wood removed and does not color the sound.  The neck shape retains a period correct profile with soft V shape.  There are five top cracks all ancient and repaired, three have internal cleats.  The finish on the body and head stock is original with no overspray or refinishing.  The tuners, bridge and nut are also original.  The sound is powerful and crisp.  The fundamental dominates the tone with a dry woody attack.  The overall balance is very good.  The power and response from the twelve fret jumbo design is hard to compare.  These continue to be among our favorite guitars with there great looks and compelling sound.  Includes original Red-Line hard case in good condition.

1946 Gibson LG-2

SOLD

1946 Gibson LG-2 in excellent condition.  Seems we see a lot of LG-2 made just after the war.  The script logo and large neck date this to 1946.  There is no FON or serial number. This guitar has been played enough that a deep woody sound developed.  It was always cared for and shows little finish wear.  The instrument is 100% crack free.  There is light finish checking and a few small pick marks on the top.  We performed the necessary work to get it playing perfect neck reset and refret.  We were able to save the original saddle.  When we got it the original tuners were not with it but it wore cheap 70s tuners.  Fortunately no additional holes were drilled and the original bushings were still in place.  We put the original tuners back on as they work perfectly.  The neck is 1.75" at the nut and has a large comfortable round shape common to 1946 guitars.  The neck is perfectly straight and the truss rod functions as it should.  The tone is full and rich with an explosive midrange response.  Surprisingly full bass that you dont expect from an LG size guitar, even one this nice.  We've heard ones as good as this but none better.

1947 Kiesel lap steel guitar in excellent condition.  Kiesel was the predecessor to Carvin and manufactured steel guitars, pickups and amps from 1946-1949.  In 1949 the name was changed to Carvin.  This early lap steel is made from black bakelite with a wood insert down the back.  The pickup is the legendary AP-6 which was used for decades.  Really a great sounding guitar with a classy look.  22.5" scale length.

1947 Martin 00-18

SOLD

1947 Martin 00-18 in very good condition.  All original with the exception of the tuners which look to have been changed in the 1950s to Grover G-98s.  Has the cool Bergstrom Kellerman Music form Honolulu Territory of Hawaii.  Bergstrom was one of the biggest Martin dealers in the country and took full advantage of the Hawaiian music craze of the 30s.  This guitar came to us from Hawaii and we suspect it spent its entire life there up to this point.  We reset the neck and cleaned up the frets.  There is one older repaired top crack.  The finish is all original and has developed a wonderful orange patina.  The neck is a large round shape with little taper to it.  It has a strong fundamental with nice even overtones.  It is well balanced and even all over the neck.  Includes hard case.

1948 Gibson L-7P

SOLD

1948 Gibson L-7 Premiere in very goodcondition. The L-7P was only around for a short while being introduced in 1948 and replaced a few years later by the L-7C.  Nearly all original guitar, exact reproduction pickguard traced from the original before it disintegrated.  Guitar has been refretted with larger than original wire.  We have found that the slightly larger fretwire really helps with the volume and clarity on Gibson archtop guitars.  Finish is all original with the exception of a repair on the lower bout from where a output jack was.  There is some overspray over the repair.  Overall it looks great.  Nice handful round late 40s neck shape that we consider to be about perfect.  Tall original bridge with plenty of room to adjust the action either direction.  Original brown case included.

1948 National 1155

$4799

1948 National 1155 in excellent condition.  These guitars were a collaboration between National-Valco and Gibson.  The bodies were made by Gibson and identical to the J-45 of the era and the rest was done by National.  The neck is similar in profile to an early 1960s Gibson.  It is thin for the era with almost no taper but has a 1 3/4" nut width and 2 1/4" string spacing.  The body is solid mahogany with a one piece back, Adirondack spruce top, scalloped bracing, finished in a dark brown sunburst a bit different from a J-45.  The playability is excellent thanks to a neck reset and although there is no adjustable truss rod the neck is dead straight.  All original except for new saddle and bridge pins.  The sound is big and boomy and certainly has the jumbo Gibson thing, but a bit different too.  Hard to describe but very appealing and not like any other guitar.  It reminds us of some of the Harmony 1260s that we have converted to X bracing.  There is one repaired top crack and one repaired back crack that runs the length of the guitar, both done with hide glue.  Comes with hard case.

1948 National 1160

SOLD

1948 National 1160 in excellent condition.  This model was essentially a rebranded Gibson LG-3 made for National.  It was only made for one year like this with the set neck.  This one is all original right down to the case and packing slip from when it shipped to the music store.  It has had a neck reset and a few brace ends reglued.  The neck is a large round profile with 1 3/4" nut width and 2 1/4" string spacing.  The sound is exceptional, like a great LG-2 or LG-3.  Dry woody and focused are the first words that come to mind.  The playability is excellent and overall it is a bargain of a vintage guitar.

1949 Gibson J-45

SOLD

1949 Gibson J-45 in good condition.  We are delighted to have this special J-45 back in the shop.  This guitar is the only J-45 we have ever seen with a walnut back, mahogany sides and spruce top.  The top is triple bound and the peg-head is tapered.  The factory order number is 2902.  Action is perfect having been set-up in our in house shop.  There are two repaired back cracks and four repaired side cracks. Cracks are all structurally solid repairs however cosmetically not the cleanest workmanship. The bridge has been re-glued and a new saddle and replacement nut have been made.  The original tuners have been rebuttoned.  Otherwise the guitar is all original. The sound is exactly what you want in a late 40s Jumbo, big thick lows and mids with volume to spare.  The walnut back and straight bridge give it an interesting and unique sound. Includes original hard case.

1949 Gibson L-7 Black

SOLD

1949 Gibson L-7 black in excellent condition.  The serial number indicates this guitar as a 1949 as does the hardware; however it has a small pearl script logo and round neck which indicate a 1946 guitar.  Gibson did not apply serial numbers until instruments left the factory.  Apparently this guitar was begun in 1946 and finished in 1949.  It has the deepest black finish that you only find on Gibson guitars.  The special pigments they used in the 30s and 40s give the black an incomparable depth.  We did a refret and made a repro pickguard.  Includes original brown Lifton case.

1949 Martin 0-18

SOLD

1949 Martin 0-18 in excellent condition.  We suspect this guitar was played very few hours since new.  When we got it the neck was loose and it was unplayable.  After a neck reset that required little more than reshimming and gluing it back in place it was whole again.  The guitars appears to have been stored in damp conditions at some point in its life.  There is some checking on the headstock and back that indicate this.  Otherwise the finish is shiny original and in great shape overall.  We set the neck to the original uncut saddle.  The frets are original and have no wear.  The original Kluson tuners are like new and bright.  The sound is powerful and full.  The tapered bracing adds a nice bass response to the balance.  The neck is a full rounded profile with 1 11/16" nut width.  One of the cleanest and most intact 0-18s around.  Includes original soft case.

$4499

1951 Gibson L-7 Blonde in very good condition.  The L-7s from mid 40s through the early 50s are some of the finest all around arch-top guitars ever made.  They combine great tone with looks, playability, and practicality.  This one is a wonderful player due to a recent refret with medium size frets.  The bridge, tailpiece, and pickguard are replacements of the correct style.  The pickup is a handwound Kent Armstrong made by the man himself.  It balances nicely with bronze strings which is how we have it set-up.  The neck is an excellent profile with 1 11/16" nut width. The finish is worn off the back of the neck and it feels great.  A great guitar for playing acoustic or plugging in.  Includes original hard case.

1951 Gibson SJ-200 in very good condition.  Beautiful solid maple back sides with heavy flame in the sides.  All original other than a very nicely done refret.  The back and sides are crack free, the top has five repaired tope cracks and a reglued center seam all nicely done and tight.  The real kicker with this guitar is the sound.  It has a big lively woody tone with a nice kick in the low midrange, the kind that rattle your ribs a bit.  There is just enough natural compression to smooth everything out and make it sound like a SJ-200, but still loud and lively.  Not what most people expect to hear when they pick up an SJ-200.  The 1 11/16" nut width and 25.25" with round neck shape make for a comfortable player.  This was guitar was previously owned by a  world class producer and guitar player and made it several albums.  Includes original brown Lifton case also in very good condition.

1952 Gibson J-45

SOLD

1952 Gibson J-45 in very good condition.  This guitar was owned and used extensively by Greg Brown.  Greg was one of Tom's first professional customers when he began working on guitars in Iowa City.  Greg used this guitar on several albums and tours in the mid 90s.  It can be heard on The Poet Game and The Live One.  The guitar is overall nice shape.  Has had a neck reset and refret.  The bridge was previously shaved down before the neck was reset.  To get it back to full height Tom laminated a piece of rosewood on the underside.  There is a McIntyre pickup with endpin jack installed.  It is a great sounding guitar with a full powerful low end.  It can best be described as the prototypical early 50s Gibson jumbo sound.  You get a good sense of it listening to the song Poet Game on the eponymous album.  It has a comfortable 1 11/16" nut width and nice round shape to the neck.  The finish is all original and has great patina.  A very nice guitar that has made some great music over the years.  Includes newer Gibson hard case.

1952 Gibson L-5-C Natural

SOLD

1952 Gibson L-5-C Natural in excellent condition.  This is simply one of the finest sounding 17" archtop guitars we have seen.  We try and avoid using the term best ever as it had been so over used and widely applied in this business, however in this case it is deserved.  Tom has known this guitar for over 20 years having worked on it over that time.  He reset the neck around 15 years ago, a nearly invisible job.  The guitar is refretted with medium fret wire and received a recent grind and polish here.  The bridge is at full height and original with room to adjust up or down.  The finish is all original and in nice shape with fine light checking.  The patina shows just the right amount of wear, enough that it looks old but obviously very well cared for all its years.  The tuners and tailpiece are original, the pickguard is a perfect reproduction.  The maple back and sides are highly flamed as is the maple neck.  The Sitka Spruce top is even and tight grained with no runout.  The neck is 1 11/16" at the nut and 25 1/4" scale.  The mid 50s are a great time period for Gibson neck shapes and this is no exception, round full, comfortable.  The tonal and dynamic range is stunning.  Very lively even with the softest touch.  Power to spare when called on.  A fine instrument in every regard.  Includes original hard case.

1953 Martin D-18 in very good condition.  This is one of the much talked about non-Sitka top guitars from 1953.  Hard to say if it is Red spruce or Engleman but it is certainly not Sitka.  All original guitar with only minor repairs ever done.  Two neatly repair top cracks in the lower bout and the usual pickguard crack and one two inch back crack.  The neck has not been reset nor does it need it. The original ivory saddle is uncut and the action is at 7/64" on the bass side and 5/64" on the treble at the 12th fret.  The original bridge is uncut same for the nut.  The power and tone of this guitar is impressive.  The trebles are thick and singing while the midrange puts out enough umph to put any banjo in its place.  The neck is a comfortable rounded shape with plenty of heft to it and the original frets are in good shape.  These D-18 from 1953 are special guitars with a unique sound.  We have had several pass though our shop and continue to be wowed by them.  With pristine examples fetching as much as $18,000 it is obvious the market has caught on to their greatness.  Includes 1970s Martin blue case.

1954 Gibson J-185

SOLD

1954 Gibson J-185 in good condition. This is one of the most sought and rare of all Gibson flat-top guitars.  Produced from 1951-1957 there were a total of 918 made in both sunburst and natural finishes.  The combination of solid maple back and sides, spruce top, and a mahogany neck create a unique and wonderful sounding guitar.  The finish is original and in fair shape with checking and play wear all over but no overspray.  There are several repaired side cracks, four top cracks, and two back cracks, the neck is reset, bridge is replaced with proper size and style but for the maltese cross inlays, refret with medium tall wire with little wear.  All of this adds up to an amazing sounding playing guitar for quite a bit less than the minty ones.  As you might expect it sounds a whole lot better than the clean ones that never got played too.  When you play this guitar you understand why the J-185 is such a desirable model.  There is nothing else like it in the vintage guitar world.  It is lively and clear with a bright woody tone.  Excellent for strumming chords, flat-picking, finger-style , you name it. 1955 Gibson ES-350

ON HOLD

1955 Gibson ES-350 in excellent plus condition.  This is an absolute stunner big blonde 350.  This version was only made for a minute and is our favorite of the variants.  The combination of 25.25" scale, deep body, P-90 with volume and tone for each and three way switch is a winning recipe.  The neck is a perfect large round shape that fills up your hand so nicely.  Original frets are full height and in great shape.  Neck is straight and it plays beautifully anywhere on the fingerboard.  All original except for a replaced ebony bridge top which looks to have been on here a long time.  This guitar nails the Merle Travis sound from the 1950s and of course you can play Chuck Berry licks on it all day long.  The original blonde finish shows off the attractive figured body wood.  Includes original brown lifton case.

1956 Fender Stratocaster in excellent plus condition.  This is the cleanest '56 Strat on the market.  The condition is 100% original with no excuses or explanations.  Neck and body are pencil dated 3-56.  Neck has XA initials before date.  The finish is in incredible condition with no checking or fading.  The pictures speak volumes about how clean and perfect this guitar is.  A true under the bed gem.  The neck is near quarter sawn and has nice straight grain.  It is a comfortable U shape with the standard 1 5/8" nut width 7 1/4" radius and 25 1/2" scale.  Overall weight is 8.25 pounds.  All hardware is shiny and looks near new.  No signs of pitting or rust or even tarnish anywhere!  The original frets are in near new condition.  The only signs it was ever used are wear in the first position through the thin lacquer finish and one little wear spot on the back.  The neck is straight as can be and the guitar sets-up perfectly.  It is a joy to play with easy low action.  The original pickups are strong and full with excellent snap, spank, and woodiness.  This folks, is what every Strat copy is chasing.  The original case with Fender badge is also in excellent condition and has the bridge cover as well.  For pictures of the guts and a video of Eric Johnson demoing the guitar please contact info@trcrandall.com.

1956 Fender Telecaster

SOLD

1956 Fender Telecaster in very good condition.  Neck and body dated 3-56 in pencil.  All original with the exception of a fret job and new bone nut, tone and volume pot, saddles.  The neck finish is 100% original and straight.  The body was oversprayed in clear nitro many many years ago and it has aged to a more yellow color very much like the blackguard finishes.  The pickups are original, they have been out of the guitar and the leads slightly extended.  This guitar belonged to a well known touring and studio musician, so you can be sure it sounds and plays great.  This is not a collectors guitar, it is simply and incredible playing and sounding guitar.  It is light weight at 6.9 pounds and resonant.  The neck is a perfect rounded handful of a shape with medium size frets that we just gave a grind a polish.  The bridge pickup is hot and clear and just the way a tele should be.  This guitar is best experienced in person.  Includes newer hard case.

1956 Guild F-40

SOLD

1956 Guild F-40 in excellent condition.  Very rare early New York made Guild.  These early ones have a lot in common with the Epiphone flattops from the early 50s, many of the employees were the same.  Arch maple back with no bracing, maple sides, and spruce top.  Three piece mahogany neck with Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge.  The neck is 1 5/8" wide at the the nut, 7 1/4" radius fingerboard, 2 1/8" string spacing, and 25 1/2" scale length.  These have a unique bracing pattern that gives them an almost archtop like bark in the midrange.  Very even all over the neck, again like a good archtop.  Really an interesting and different sound from most any other flattop guitar.  Very lively and fun to play up the neck.  This guitar was refretted and had the neck reset by Gruhn's shop a few years back.  It plays beautifully and is all original otherwise.  Crack and break free and 100% original finish.  Includes new hard case.

The body is one piece ash and the guitar weighs in at 7.5 pounds.  Original tweed case in very good condition as well.

1957 Gibson J-185 Blonde

SOLD

1957 Gibson J-185 in very good condition. The finish is original and in fair shape with checking and play wear all over but no overspray or refin.  Most of the finish on the back of neck is worn off and has a burnished feel.  Has been refreted with medium wire, neck is reset with good saddle height, bridge had previously been shaved down so we laminated a piece on the bottom to get it back to proper height. Four small repaired back cracks and one small repaired side crack.  Top has replaced pickguard and repaired pickguard crack.  When you play this guitar you understand why the J-185 is such a desirable model.  There is nothing else like it in the vintage guitar world.  It is lively and clear with a bright woody tone.  Excellent for strumming chords, flat-picking, finger-style , you name it. 1959 Martin 000-28

SOLD

1959 Martin 000-28 in very good condition.  This is a wonderful guitar perfect for the player who wants a 60 year old Brazilian rosewood guitar for less than half the usual price.  This guitar was modified over the years mostly in the 1960s from our understanding.  It was a one owner guitar and was played extensively.  The modifications are: scalloped bracing very neatly done and it looks proper, herringbone top trim, new fingerboard with fancy inlays, Waverly tuners, replaced pickguard, replaced bridge, top finish oversprayed. The guitar is structurally solid and has a wonderful sound.  The scalloping of the braces was a common practice in the 1960s, think Neil Young's D-45 which he had scalloped immediately upon getting it.  Playability is excellent with plenty of saddle should you want the action even lower.  A tremendous amount of vintage guitar for the money.  Includes hard case.

1960s Wandre Spazial

$5399

1960s Wandre Spezial in excellent condition.  Those who know these guitars are passionate about their design style and sound.  This one is no exception to us from the collection of Steve Earle it is a fine example.  The trem system was reworked by Tom about eight years ago and it functions better than any one of these we have seen.  It stays in tune and has a great action.  The sound of the Davoli pickups and aluminum beam in the neck make for a unique and awesome tone.  Buddy Miller is noted for using these guitars for years.  It is rare to find one in this condition and perfectly functional.  Tom also adapted a hard case to fit this guitar perfectly.

1960s Wandre Twist

SOLD

1960s Wandre Twist in excellent condition.  The Wandre guitars of the 1960s have some of the most unique construction and style of any guitar made.  This particular one has a wood body covered a sparkle black lacquer.  The cast aluminum neck has celluloid covering on the back and Brazilian rosewood on the front.  The pickups are the desirable Davoli version.  The controls are master volume tone and three way switch.  Two of the original controls were broken and we replaced them.  The neck is nice and straight and plays perfectly in every position.  The tone from the Davoli pickups is clear and spanky.  The middle position is particularly compelling on this guitar.  A definite statement guitar to bring to the gig.  Includes an old and possible original soft case.

1961 Carvin #31-SGB

SOLD

1961 Carvin #31-SGB in very good condition.  These old Carvins are some of our favorite electric guitars ever made.  They have the whole California vibe with Bigsby and Fender elements in the design.  The two AP-6 pickups sound incredible, a bit like a P-90.  They have the perfect amount of microphonics and are mounted directly to the body which makes them really sing.  Tons of output, especially in the neck pickup.  The rock maple body and neck make for great sustain.  The neck is a chunky slightly V shape tapering to a U as you move up towards the body.  25" scale Brazilian rosewood slab fingerboard and 1 9/16" nut width.  Volume and tone for each pickup and 3-way selector.  As simple as it gets and couldn't work better.  The sound, the look, the feel, it is hard to beat.  Comes with period case.

1961 Fender Bass VI

SOLD

1961 Fender Bass VI in good condition.  This is an early example of the venerable Bass VI.  It has a neck date from 1961 and pots that date to the last week of 1961.  The serial number puts it right at the end of 1961 as well.  The neck finish is original while the body finish is a refin.  It came to us with a sad looking and very poorly applied black finish.  We opted to strip it down to the wood and refinish it in Sonic blue nitrocellulose lacquer.  The finish is applied in a period correct method.  The contours of the body were not sanded or altered in the process.  The guitar came to us with no pick-guard so we made a reproduction.  The electronics are all original.  The pickups are all strong and sound amazing.  The bridge is a vintage mustang bridge which works very well on this.  We have it set-up with baritone strings tuned to G, however it can easily be changed to E tuning with heavier strings which we have. The neck is the classic early 60s round C shape with 1 9/16" nut width.  Incredibly fun to play as a solo instrument.  These seem to always find homes in the best studios.  Includes the original white tolex hard case in OK condition.

1962 Gibson J-45

SOLD

1962 Gibson J-45 in excellent condition.  Has factory original dual pickguard.  100% original with almost no work ever done or needed.  We repaired a small crack near the fingerboard caused by shrinkage of the pickguard.  Has DeArmond pickups installed from when it was new.  Someone had intentions of playing this guitar on stage but clearly never got around to it.  There is almost zero evidence that this guitar was played.  The finish is bright and clean, the frets are original and full height with no wear, the tuners look like new.  Being a 1962 model it retains the small maple bridge plate and wider neck.  This guitar excels at strumming and big chords.  Perfect amount of compression makes it sound like a great recording of a guitar in real time.  Would make a fine stage guitar for anyone trying to make a statement.  Includes hard case.

SOLD

1963 Gibson Hummingbird in excellent condition.  This is a super clean 100% original no excuses guitar.  The finish shows some minor checking, about enough that you would believe it was made in 1963 and not 2014.  It has all the desirable early features like the wider neck and small bridge plate.  There are no signs of play-wear.  The original frets look about new.  The original case is also very clean suggesting this guitar lived under a bed for much of its life.  The sound is classic adjustable bridge Gibson.  Great for strumming rhythm.  Overall a great guitar in collector grade condition.
