1974 Philip Kubicki #6 Mahogany
1974 Philip Kubicki dreadnought #6. Constructed with tightly flamed Honduran mahogany back and sides, Sitka spruce top, flamed mahogany three piece neck, ebony bridge and fingerboard, 25.5" scale length with a 1.75" nut width and 2.10" string spacing at the bridge, colored wood purfling on the top and back with oval abalone inlays on fingerboard, classical style rosette, Spanish heel, unique X brace pattern, adjustable truss rod, individual and adjustable bone saddles, Fender stamped Grover tuners (same as found on LTD model), and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Kubicki is perhaps best know for his innovative work while employed by fender from 1964-1973 where he worked under Roger Rossmeisl in the R&D department. After Rossmeisl left Fender Phil decided to move to Santa Barbra and start his own company. In 1978 Phil married Carla Collins and formed "Philip Kubicki Technology" making bodies, necks and custom guitars and later the Factor Bass line. During the years between Fender and "Philip Kubicki Technology" Phil built seven acoustic guitars one was made for Joni Mitchell along with a dulcimer and the other were for himself and his family. These have been retained by his estate since his passing in 2013. This guitar is labeled #6 November, 1974 made in his workshop on Paradise Road. The passion and innovation that Phil is renowned for is fully embodied by this masterpiece of an instrument. Phil cut his teeth in the guitar world building classical guitars and it was an early example of his work that got him hired at Fender as a 19 year old. The Spanish heel, rosette and marquetry present on this guitar are nods to his roots. The dreadnought design was the predominant style at the time but his take on it is all his own. The unique bridge design is both elegant and highly functional as each string can be compensated for ideal intonation. The guitar is in near new condition with slight crazing to the finish. The neck is a a wonderful D shaped with a consistent depth. The crisp clear attack and perfect intonation make for a wonderfully articulate voice. There bass has a solid thump while the response is satisfying with both flat-pick and fingers. This instrument is just as happy playing bluegrass tunes as delicate fingerstyle numbers. The craftsmanship and execution of design are stunning. A truly unique and most enjoyable guitar. Includes newer hard shell case.
