1936 Martin D-28 Shadetop
1936 Martin D-28 Shadetop in very good condition. This D-28 was constructed with an Adirondack spruce top, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, a mahogany neck with an ebony fingerboard, and an ebony bridge. Appointments include a very rare “Shaded Top” sunburst finish, herringbone purfling and 28 style abalone fingerboard inlays. This Martin has an exact reproduction bridgeplate made and installed by Tom Crandall in house that is properly tucked under the X brace as the original was. The guitar has had an extremely clean professional neck reset, refret, and one small, meticulously repaired, nearly indistinguishable, patch on the side of the lower bout. It is largely crack free save for one professionally repaired 3” hairline on the back close to the center seam. The neck measures 1 3/4" at the nut, has a depth of 0.87” at the first fret and 1.11” at the tenth fret. The guitar has a 25.4” scale, weighs 4.40 lbs, and features forward scalloped X bracing. In the pantheon of holy grail acoustic guitars, this 1936 Martin D-28 shade top sits squarely at the top. It is one of only two shade top D-28s made out of 61 total D-28s produced in 1936. An incredibly rare, exceptionally fine sounding instrument with a truly striking finish and gorgeous playwear. Comes with a Calton flight case that allegedly was formerly Doc Watson’s road case.
